Gail Ellison, PhD
Writer in Residence

Gail K. Ellison, Ph.D, Writer-in-Residence in the Shands Arts in Medicine program and adjunct faculty in the UF College of Fine Arts, teaches Reflective Writing in the College of Medicine. She is a guest lecturer in several other UF programs, including the Integrative Medicine Elective, the Physician Assistant Program, the Introduction to the Arts in Medicine course, and the Arts in Healthcare Summer Intensive.

Dr. Ellison has presented on reflective writing in healthcare settings and in medical education at meetings of the Society for the Arts in Healthcare and at the Poetry and Medicine Conference at Duke University. She has presented on longitudinal dreamwork as a healing practice at meetings of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, the C.G. Jung Analytical Psychology Club (London UK), the International Conference on Spirituality and Healing (Durham UK), and the International Conference on Science & Consciousness (Albuquerque NM).

Her recent publications include In-House Wisdom, a collection of writing by patients, staff, and students at Shands and the UF Health Sciences Center and Writing for the Health of It, a book of writing prompts for patients.

In 2005, Dr. Ellison won Honorable Mention in the Blair L. Sadler International Healing Arts Competition for her work with patients, staff, and students in healthcare professions. She has received grant funding from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to assess outcomes of the Reflective Writing Elective in the College of Medicine, and from an anonymous family foundation to expand Writing in Medicine at the University of Florida.
