One
of Arts in Medicine’s core values is that our whole society needs
education on the vital importance of the arts to individual and community
health. Our Artists in Residence program serves as a model for arts
in healthcare programming and has developed numerous educational components.
Our strongest educational component is the Center
for the Arts in Healthcare Research and Education (CAHRE), the educational
outgrowth of AIM, housed in UF’s College of Fine Arts. The mission
of CAHRE is to advance education, training, research, and interdisciplinary
collaboration in the arts in healthcare. CAHRE supports ten courses
taught by CAHRE faculty and affiliates in four colleges at UF and offers
a Dance in Healing Certificate, two annual Arts in Healthcare Summer
Intensive training programs, and study abroad programs.
The
majority of Arts in Medicine's volunteers
come from our UF student population. Giving these students the opportunity
to earn credit toward their college degrees has strengthened their commitment
to volunteer work while providing our program with the highly trained
volunteers.
- The Traffic
Art and Dance Exchange program for teens and young adults struggling
with obesity encourages the incorporation of dance and movement into
healthier lifestyles.
- The Oral History Wall at Shands AGH parallels the lives of several
area seniors with the history and geography of Gainesville.
- The Reflective Writing course in the College of Medicine provides
first and second year medical students with opportunities for reflection
and self-expression.
- Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction courses
educate caregivers to the importance of stress reduction modalities
to improve their own physical and mental health.
