Pelvic Pain Questions and Answers

The following questions and answers are a preview of discussion topics for the free seminar about pelvic pain.

What is pelvic pain?

Almost 1 in 7 American women between the ages of 18-50 suffer from chronic pelvic pain. Pelvic pain is pain from the navel to the groin and can include menstrual pain, pain with sexual intercourse, and scar pain after any abdominal or vaginal surgery. Men also experience pelvic pain.

What causes pelvic pain?

Inflammation, infection, surgery, poor posture and trauma can cause pelvic pain. Pelvic pain can also occur without any known cause. Pelvic pain is very common but it is not normal.

Can physical therapy help alleviate pelvic pain?

Specifically trained physical therapists have been recognized as using manual therapy, exercise and modalities to help women and men with pelvic pain for more than 30 years. Both males and females report a significant decrease in their pelvic pain after being treated by physical therapy.

Physical therapists at Shands Rehab Center at Magnolia Parke hear testimonies from their patients. Patients say that their menstrual pain is no longer limiting their functional level and that they are now able to participate in sexual intercourse without pain for the first time in their lives.

What other pelvic disorders can be treated by physical therapy?

Some of the health diagnoses also treated by specialists in women’s health are endometriosis, vulvodynia, vulvar vestibulitis, vaginismus, pudendal neuralgia, levator ani syndrome, interstitial cystitis, urine and fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, and pain with defecation or urination.

The women’s health physical therapists at Shands Rehab Center at Magnolia Parke are highly trained in the field of pelvic pain and are willing to answer any questions a woman or man may have with regards to the benefits of physical therapy.
