Cochlear Implant
A cochlear implant is an
electronic device;
however, it is not a hearing aid. A small part of it is
surgically implanted into the cochlea (inner ear) to provide
direct electrical
stimulation of the cochlear nerve. This stimulation is designed
to allow individuals with severe to profound hearing loss
to perceive sound. The cochlear implant system is comprised
of three parts: the speech processor, internal devices, and
speech coding strategies.
Cochlear Implant Process
The Shands at UF difference
Candidacy and successful use of a cochlear implant depends highly
on a multidisciplinary team approach consisting of
the patient and family, otolaryngology, audiology,
speech language pathology, psychology, and social services.
