The University of Florida College of Medicine’s Gastroenterology division
is nationally and internationally renowned for patient care, clinical
investigations and research. It is consistently recognized in the top three
percent of gastroenterology programs nationwide by US News and
World Report for treating patients with liver disease, liver transplants, and all gastrointestinal and pancreatic diseases.

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition offers extensive
inpatient and outpatient services, including a unique gastrointestinal diagnostic
laboratory for specialized testing. This laboratory enables physicians to
measure gastrointestinal hormones and acid output in the stomach, test pancreatic
functions, and conduct breath tests for a variety of diseases. Shands at UF
also houses a 20-bed inpatient digestive and liver disease service.
The Division of Gastroenterology, Heptaology and Nutrition specializes in:
- Pancreatic function tests (secretin test, serum trypsin)
- Esophageal, gastric, small bowel and rectal motility studies
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, diagnostic and therapeutic
- Biliary manometry
- Liver biopsy
- Hyperalimentation
- Endoscopic ultrasonography
- Gastrointestinal bleeding

- Motility disturbances
- Nutritional disorders
- Endoscopy and colonoscopy
- Treatment of GI bleeding
- Polypectomy
- Endoscopic removal of bile duct stones
- Biliary and pancreatic duct stent placement

The faculty also is known for several advanced procedures:
- ERCP (an endoscopic procedure to evaluate and treat conditions of the
bile duct and pancreas)
- Endoscopic ultrasonography (a procedure to image gastrointestinal organs
with a sound probe mounted on the end of a scope and to biopsy abnormalities
both within and outside the intestinal tract)
- Laser treatment of tumors and abnormal blood vessels
- Capsule endoscopy (a small capsule is swallowed and takes approximately
10,000 images of the intestinal tract as it passes through)
- Endoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease
