Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Shands AGH NICU cared for more than 200 infant patients last year, offering services that included:

  • Oxygen therapy
  • IV therapy
  • Cardiac and respiratory monitoring
  • Thermoregulation (keeping the baby warm)
  • Feeding assistance
  • Education for families

The NICU is licensed as a Level II NICU, which means the unit can care for infants who weigh greater than 1,000 grams or approximately 2.2 pounds. Our staff makes all attempts to include the family in the daily care of their infant. Visitation in the NICU is open to two visitors at a time, except for specified times during the day, which are change-of-shift hours and some quiet time for the babies in the late afternoon.

We strive to educate parents about the equipment, therapies and medications their infant may receive and keep them informed of changes in their infant’s plan of care. Prior to discharge, parents are encouraged to view educational videos, attend CPR class and have hands-on experience with their infant’s care to prepare them for the excitement of taking their new baby home.
