Labor and Delivery Unit

Shands AGH Maternal/Child Services wants you to understand and be involved in all aspects of your care during your hospital stay. We encourage expectant moms to visit Shands AGH Pre-Admission Services when you are 28 weeks pregnant or soon thereafter. This visit gives us important information to care for you when you arrive in Labor and Delivery.

Once you are admitted to Shands AGH for labor, you will be in a private room for labor, delivery and recovery. You also have other choices related to your care, and we encourage you to ask for any of the following that appeal to you:

  • Aromatherapy, relaxation music, birthing ball, birthing mirror or perineal massage.
  • 24-hour anesthesia coverage for pain management during childbirth and for cesarean-section deliveries.
  • Ability to have up to six labor support people in the delivery room.
  • Lactation consultant available to help initiate breastfeeding and provide continued assistance until mother is confident with breastfeeding her infant.

We want you to be comfortable caring for yourself and your baby at home and encourage you to ask questions. We begin education after your delivery to achieve this goal.
