Endoscopy

More than 3,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures are performed each year in the Endoscopy department at Shands at AGH including:

  • Gastroenterology procedures (colonoscopy and gastroscopy)
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Outpatient cardioversions
  • Transesphogeal Electrocardiograms

A registered nurse and technician are involved in each procedure. Procedures also can be performed in radiology and traveling equipment can be brought to the patient's bedside if he or she is too sick to have the procedure done in the unit. Seventy percent of the patients have anesthesia and 30 percent are under conscious sedation.

The unit is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. but is staffed 24-hours-a-day for emergency procedures. If patients need recovery following the procedure, they will go to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. However, most patients do not need recovery and if they are admitted to the hospital will return to their patient room. Outpatients will go to the Ambulatory Care Unit.
