Surgical Services

The Shands AGH Surgery department performs more than 5,000 surgical cases per year. Our surgeries include both inpatient and outpatient.

We perform:

General surgery
Orthopaedic surgery
Cardiac surgery
Vascular surgery
Neurologic surgery
Plastic and reconstructive surgery
Urological surgery
Otolaryngology (ENT) surgery
Gynecological surgery
Ophthalmology surgery

Most patients who undergo elective surgery are brought to the hospital the morning of the surgery. Elective surgeries are performed between 8 am and 6 pm. However, the operating rooms remain available for 24-hours for urgent and emergency surgeries.

In the pre-operation holding room, families can stay with the patient until the patient goes into the operating room. An anesthesiologist, a registered nurse and a surgical technician are assigned to each patient during the operation.
