Cardiac Catherization

In addition, these cardologists perform cardiac catheterizations at the Shands Lake Shore Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

Cardiac catheterization is used to study the various functions of the heart. Using different techniques, the arteries in the heart can be viewed by injecting dye to detect any narrowing or blockage in one or more of the arteries. A catheterization can also measure the blood pressure within the heart and how much oxygen is in the blood. It’s also used to get information about the pumping ability of the heart muscle as well as to assess the heart valves and blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

Also, cardiologists have the ability, in this cath lab, to assess other major blood vessels in the body to detect blocked arteries feeding the brain, kidneys, and legs.
