Professionals on this 15-bed unit provide obstetrical and gynecological care. The unit consists of seven labor beds and eight regular beds It is the only obstetrical unit in Lake City.

Childbirth education classes

Nurses and physicians provide childbirth classes on a regular basis.

The childbirth education course is a series of eight, two-hour classes for mothers and their labor support partner before the baby is born. These classes are designed to encompass all aspects of delivery and post-natal care as well as a tour of the facilities. The classes are taught at Shands AGH and consist of the following informative sessions:

• Before labor begins
• Breastfeeding*
• Recognizing the stages of labor
• Birth of the baby
• Variations of labor and delivery
• Caring for yourself after the delivery
• Newborn care*
• Infant CPR and safety*

*Registration for this class is recommended by the expectant mother's 28th week of pregnancy. The cost is $70, but the fee can be waived in special circumstances.
