The Shands at UF Difference
The UF surgeons practicing at Shands bring a wide range of interests, ages, backgrounds, skills, training and areas of emphasis that encompass the entire field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
Shands at UF is also a tertiary care center, allowing the team to treat the most complex problems with advanced skills and technology. One of the most important aspects of the thoracic and cardiovascular team’s work at Shands, for example, is the surgical care, in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, of heart failure patients. The team has a special interest in surgical procedures, both standard and experimental, that can treat heart failure and lessen the need for transplantation.
A similar research and care track exists for patients with severe pulmonary failure. Another area of interest and expertise is the treatment of thoracic aortic problems, taking advantage of the full range of therapeutic options available today, including endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic disease and new surgical approaches to the thoracic aorta.
The team is committed to the education of surgical residents of all levels by providing fellowship positions in complex aortic cardiac surgery and standard thoracic surgical residencies, as well as the training of University of Florida general surgical residents and the medical students of the University of Florida.
UF physicians and surgeons are also involved in both clinical and basic research and development. A well-established program manages clinical trials, ensuring we are at the forefront of breakthroughs in cardiac and thoracic care. At any given time, a number of clinical trials are in progress.
