Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology
Electrophysiology focuses on the heart’s electrical system and heart rhythm abnormalities.
Electrophysiologists at Shands at UF offer a wide range of procedures that diagnosis and treat heart problems. In collaboration with the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery team, more complex procedures, such as the minimally invasive Maze procedure, are also offered.
Diagnosis
Electrophysiologists use various non-invasive procedures to diagnose problems with heart rhythms, including:
- Electrocardiography
- Event or Holter monitoring
- Tilt table testing
- Evaluation of defibrillator function and reprogramming
- Transtelephonic pacemaker monitoring
- Carelink (remote monitoring for devices)
Treatment
To treat arrhythmias or other problems with the heart’s electrical system, the electrophysiologists use:
- Radiofrequency ablation for supraventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, accessory pathways (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome), and ventricular tachycardia.
- Cryoablation
- Implantation of cardioverter-defibrillators
- Biventricular device implantation
- Permanent pacemaker implantation
- Lead extraction
- Curative surgery for WPW and other SVT when not ablatable
- Subendocardial resection for ventricular tachycardia
