Thoracic and cardiovascular surgery
The
thoracic and cardiovascular (TCV) surgery program at the
Shands Cardiovascular
Center at the University of Florida specializes in providing
surgical care for:
- Pediatric
congenital heart defects

Adult aortic surgeries
-
Valve replacements
-
High risk coronary artery bypass grafting in women patients
-
High-risk patients
- Patients
with previous by-pass surgery.
UF TCV surgery patients have the lowest mortality rate in pediatric
open-heart surgery in the United States. Shands Cardiovascular Center
at UF is also one of the few medical centers statewide with the
availability of bi-ventricular assist devices that can be surgically
placed during or before surgery to support individuals prior to
or after transplantation, high-risk bypass or valve surgeries. The
TCV surgery team also plays an integral role in heart and lung transplantation.
Unique
TCV devices, technology and a team of research physicians
and nurses enable TCV surgeons to perform the following
procedures:

Adult aortic surgeries including dissecting aneurysms,
aneurysm repairs, treating complex aortic disease, aortic
valve repairs, double and triple valve repairs

Bi-ventricular assist devices

Implantable ventricular assist devices
-
Coronary artery bypass grafts for high risk patients
-
Mini-coronary artery bypass grafts via thoracotomy
-
Tetrology of Fallot repairs including Fontans, Hemi-Fontans
for hypoplastic heart patients

Valve replacements
-
Heart transplantation - initial post-op recovery
-
Pediatric/neonatal heart transplantation - initial post-op
recovery
-
Adult/pediatric lung transplantation including single,
single -bilateral and double lung transplants - initial
post-op recovery

Eloesser flaps that are not performed in many facilities
-
Partial lung resections
-
Lobectomies
-
Pleurodesis
-
Pneumonectomies
-
Wedge resections
-
Treatment of difficult-to-repair bronchopleural fistulas,
chronic empyema, low ejection fractions, congenital heart
defects, spontaneous pneumothoraces, Wolff-Parkinson-White
syndrome, and patients refusing blood products
