Ear, balance & hearing disorders
Nearly
30 million Americans have impaired hearing. For children,
the most common cause of hearing loss is otitis media (ear infection). For
adults, the most common contributing factors are excessive
noise, drugs, toxins, and heredity.
Hearing
loss is a medical disorder.
University
of Florida ear nose and throat (ENT) physicians can treat
conditions such as:
In a
limited number of patients, hearing loss can be surgically
corrected. Hearing aids and rehabilitation can substantially
reduce hearing loss in the vast majority of patients who
cannot be helped by surgery. Our UF ENT physicians are also
trained to counsel parents on how to manage a hearing loss
in their child.
Your
ears are also responsible for balance. Dysequilibrium is
a balance disorder.
Symptoms
of dysequilibrium include:
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Unsteadiness
- Giddiness
University of Florida ENT
physicians are able to provide treatment for different balance
disorders such as Meniere's Disease,
vertigo and motion sickness.
