Referring your patient
You
can call (866) 548-3783 toll-free to make a referral to
the liver transplant program at the Shands Transplant Center
at the University of Florida.
When physicians refer their liver patients to the Shands
Transplant Center, the initial consultation in the Liver
Failure Clinic at Shands at UF is prioritized so the sickest
patients can be expedited through to the next step -- the
pre-transplant evaluation process.
The
purpose of the evaluation is to determine:
-
Need for liver transplantation
-
Suitability for liver transplantation
-
Urgency for liver transplantation
-
Optimize the medical treatment plan while the patient
awaits transplant.
Those
who do undergo transplantation are monitored afterward through
the Liver Transplant Clinic.
Patients
first meet one of our UF hepatologists. Depending on the
nature of the patient's disease, he or she may also undergo
a medical evaluation with a cardiologist, anesthesiologist
or pulmonologist. These experts meet to discuss each individual
case and to outline their best recommendations for care.
