Referring your patient

You can call (352) 265 8940 to make a referral the to lung transplant program at the Shands Transplant Center at the University of Florida. The initial consultation in the Lung Failure Clinic is prioritized so the sickest patients can be expedited through the process. After referral, patients begin the evaluation process.

The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the need, suitability and urgency for lung transplantation. The evaluation also helps optimize the medical treatment plan while the patient awaits transplant. Those who do undergo transplantation are monitored afterward through the Lung Transplant Clinic.

First, patients meet one of our UF pulmonologists. They then meet the rest of the lung transplant team. Depending on the nature of their disease, they also may undergo a medical evaluation with a cardiologist, anesthesiologist or pulmonologist. These experts meet to discuss each individual case and to outline their best recommendations for care.
