Urology

The surgical specialty of urology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the male reproductive tract and both the male and female urinary tract.

University of Florida urologists practicing at Shands at UF offer hospital, surgical and outpatient healthcare services including:

  • Female urology (urinary incontinence and pelvic outlet relaxation disorders)
  • Pediatric urology (congenital obstructions, vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias, and cloacal exstrophy)
  • Kidney transplantation
  • Laparascopic surgery (minimally invasive techniques for nephrectomy, unroofing lymphoceles, variococelectomy, renal biopsy, cyst excision, pyeloplasty, lymph node dissection and other procedures)
  • Neurology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and erectile dysfunction or impotence)
  • Shands Robotic Prostatectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing cancerous prostates in men. Utilizing an advanced robotic-assisted surgical system, University of Florida urologists specially trained in robotic surgeries perform small-incision prostate surgeries that deliver outstanding results.
  • Urinary tract stones (calculi) / endourology (minimally invasive therapy for kidney stones and other diseases of the urinary tract)
  • Urologic oncology (one of the few centers in the Southeast to be fully qualified by the National Cancer Institute for using experimental drugs and protocols for the treatment of bladder and prostate cancer)
  • Vasectomies

Clinical Enhancements

Shands at the University of Florida is in the process of adding new services and multidisciplinary clinics to continue providing the highest level of patient care that is expected from a premier academic medical center.

Services currently available or slated to begin in 2007 include:

  • A multi-specialty cancer clinic in collaboration with the department of radiation oncology, complete with a medical genitourinary oncologist who will participate in and oversee this multidisciplinary effort
  • A procedure room in the Urology clinic at the Shands Medical Plaza to accommodate minor surgical and diagnostic procedures
  • A minimally invasive surgery program that supports clinical procedures and provides opportunities to develop innovative technologies
  • Cryosurgery or high frequency radioablation (HIFU) for patients with prostate and renal malignancies
  • Robot-assisted laparoscopy procedures with a special emphasis on developing new surgical techniques leading to optimal oncologic outcomes while minimizing morbidity
  • An innovative clinical trial using a vascular targeted, minimally invasive treatment approach for prostate cancer is expected to launch in summer 2007
  • Further expansion of our urology clinical services, especially in areas other than urologic oncology

Access Improvements

We are implementing practice models to improve service for our referring and community physicians, patients and UF faculty.

  • We have significantly expanded our outpatient services at Shands Medical Plaza to provide better access for our patients and have increased our clinic space from six to 12 examination rooms.
  • The UF Urology Web Site and Shands.org are being updated to include important information about urologic diseases, UF faculty, services, and the mechanisms available to refer patients for consultations or for information to enroll in one of our clinical trials.
