| Circumcision
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering
the head of the penis. The procedure is most commonly done on male newborns within a few
days after birth. Parents often choose circumcision for religious, cultural, social or
hygienic reasons.
Description
Typically, after the baby receives local anesthetic, the inner and outer layers of the
foreskin are cut away and their edges are then stitched together. The procedure usually
takes about 15 minutes. The stitches either dissolve or fall out after a few days.
Possible health benefits
Circumcision makes daily cleaning of the penis easy and may reduce the risk of bacterial
infections, penile cancer and some sexually transmitted diseases. Like any minor surgery,
circumcision carries potential risks (bleeding or infection). Complications are rare.
The circumcision decision
For parents considering this option, it may help to discuss the issues, risks and
advantages of circumcision with your son’s doctor.
