Imagine a hospital where patients receive physical,
emotional and spiritual support as they heal; where the Brahm's lullaby plays over the
hospital public address system each time a baby is born; and where volunteers offer
creative and artistic activities for patients and their families.
This may not sound like your average hospital, but Shands AGH is not typical. In 1998,
Shands AGH became the first hospital in Florida to affiliate with
Planetree, a non-profit organization committed to the development of patient-focused healthcare.
Shands AGH's mission to provide patient-driven care for the whole person -- body, mind and spirit --
directly relates to the ideals of Planetree.
The Planetree philosophy is an approach that focuses on human needs where patients
are given choices and encouraged to be actively involved in their healthcare and to be
supported and nurtured as they heal. Shands AGH believes in integrating care in a
more holistic approach, one that embraces both conventional and complementary
healing methods such as aromatherapy and music therapy.
Shands AGH has developed an environment that invokes
images of a safe, healing and home-like setting. A library, kitchen, family lounge,
activity room, and meditation area are a few examples of how the hospital's
architecture can enhance the healing process. A baby grand piano in the lobby is
often used by passerbys and music students who come to practice.
