Apply for Child Life Internship

A completed application packet includes (must arrive by application deadline):

  • A completed application form (.pdf)
  • You must be enrolled in an accredited college/university during internship or be able to provide your own liability insurance
  • Official college transcript (minimum GPA 3.0)
  • Letter of reference from major advisor (may arrive separately by deadline)
  • Two letters of recommendation (may arrive separately by deadline)
  • Proof of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) immunization. If you have not had a TB skin test within the past twelve months, you will be required to get one here.
  • A one-page statement of why you want to do a Child Life/ Therapeutic Recreation internship at Shands – include strengths, skills, experience. Please be specific about your reasons for choosing this particular setting.
  • A one-page description of previous experience working with hospitalized children – include brief description of facility and population served. Provide more detailed description of your responsibilities and experiences.
  • Copy of your institution’s requirements for internship

After we have received a completed application packet, we will contact you.

Application Deadlines

  • For Summer internship - January 15
  • For Fall internship - March 15
  • For Spring internship - September 15

Possible requests at later date

  • Additional recommendations
  • Interview
  • Letter of acceptance within five days of notification if accepted.

Academic requirements

  • Prefer a registered student in Child Development, Therapeutic Recreation, Child Life or related field at your institution
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Read:
    • Child Life in Hospitals by Thompson, R.H. and Stanford, G. 1981
    • Psychosocial Care of Children in Hospitals: A Clinical Practice Manual from the ACCH Child Life Research Project, Gaynard, L. Wolfer, J. et. al 1990.
