Goals & Objectives
  1. To gain an understanding of how hospitalization can affect the developmental and emotional needs of children, newborn to 21 years.
  2. To become aware of the impact a child's illness can have on a family.
  3. To become familiar with the Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation profession and prepare to work in a hospital setting as a Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  4. To provide a safe and non-threatening environment that promotes normalization and healthy interactions between the patient, family, and staff.
  5. To have the opportunity to interact with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, adolescents, and young adults.
  6. To plan and implement group interventions with patients in the playroom setting.
  7. To plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities for children.
  8. To learn to assess levels of stress and coping mechanisms in patients and their families.
  9. To provide opportunities for and participate with patients in medical play.
  10. To have the opportunity to support patients in specialized units, subject to availability.
  11. To have the opportunity to support the parents/caregivers of patients.
  12. To have the opportunity to support the siblings of patients in group and one-to-one situations.
  13. To supervise volunteers and students in group and one-to-one interactions.
  14. To enhance the environment of the pediatric floors, e.g. bulletin boards, banners, posters, and seasonal decorations.
  15. To have the opportunity to attend and participate in multidisciplinary meetings and conferences.
  16. To observe other disciplines and services (respiratory, occupational, and physical therapy; social work).
  17. To learn Child Life documentation for patient charts and departmental statistics.
  18. To participate in administrative functions such as program evaluation, quality assurance, public relations, and fundraising.
  19. To participate in departmental meetings, in-services, supervisory sessions, and other relevant functions of the department.
