Internship Requirements
  1. List your goals and objectives for internship.
  2. Maintain a daily written journal of your impressions and experiences about the internship experience. Questions and feelings about the internship should be included. It is suggested that your journal be written immediately following the completion of your day so as to capture your impressions as well as behaviors and incidents you have observed while they are fresh on your mind. Specifically we are looking for your interventions with patients and families and their responses to you. Your journal will be read by your hospital supervisor and discussed in your supervision.
  3. Learn the process of documenting in patient charts by providing examples to the Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  4. Observe a patient over the course of the semester and present a written case study (5-7 pages) focusing on the psychosocial aspects of the child's reaction to hospitalization, their specific disease or disability and the family's reaction to the hospitalization experience. Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation interventions with the child and the results should be addressed. The case study will be presented to the Child Life staff.
  5. Study one disease entity approved by your supervisor, which will expand your knowledge as well as that of the staff, and prepare an educational tool/program for two patient groups (nonreading, and reading age). Make a presentation to Child Life Specialists, and use the tool with patients.
  6. Read designated literature in the Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation field and discuss with the Child Life staff.
  7. Attend supervision meetings with your intern supervisor(s).
  8. Give and receive feedback and constructive criticism on an ongoing basis.
  9. Complete an evaluation of yourself and the Child Life Program.
  10. Be familiar with departmental policies.
