Pediatric Liver Transplants

In an innovative approach to providing complete care for children enrolled in the Children's Medical Services (CMS) programs, the Universities of Florida and Miami combined their transplant resources to create a statewide Pediatric Liver Transplant Program. The program aims to enhance the quality of medical services provided to CMS patients and to decrease the cost of transplantation while increasing the success rate.

The program currently cares for more than 200 children who have received a new liver. The program takes pride in fostering collaboration among the transplant teams, referring physicians and CMS case managers. To promote this, the program hosts an annual educational conference and quarterly regional educational seminars and has developed a statewide database and Web site.

The educational and emotional support the program provides to the family and friends of the children is also important to those who have received a new liver or are on the waiting list. A dedicated transplant case manager, social worker and psychiatrist are available for all types of patient and family needs.
