The Shands at UF Volunteer Services department offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities in over 145 service areas in the hospital and outlying facilities:

Clinics - Volunteers in these areas can expect to assist in the daily functions of clinic operations. This is an opportunity to use BEST behaviors to promote a positive patient experience. Patient interaction varies.

Customer Service Areas - Volunteers assist patients, visitors & staff in meeting customer service expectations. Duties include: answering phones, interacting with families in waiting areas & providing information & directions.

Emergency Department/Critical Care Center- Volunteers in the ER can expect to assist nurses & technicians with a variety of tasks associated with the ER. Volunteers are to be available to the staff as needed. Some clerical duties expected.

Lab Service Areas - The lab areas offer experience in watching procedures and tests. Clerical assistance is expected (stocking, handling specimens). Patient interaction varies within each area.

  • IMMS Lab – Medical Plaza
  • Lab Administration
  • Microbiology
  • Pathology (Jr. or Sr. pre-med students)
 
Nursing Service Areas - Volunteers assist in a variety of ways including tasks such as clerical support, stocking & transportation. Patient interaction varies based on needs of unit. Using BEST behaviors volunteers can provide diversional & supportive assistance to patients.
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Burn Unit (ICU)
  • Central Distribution Center
  • GI Lab - Endoscopy
  • MICU & 11-5 Oncology/Transplant
  • Nursing Floors (5, 6, 7, 9)
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Trauma Nursing - 10th Floor
 
Operating Room - Volunteers are required to have a minimum of 60 volunteer hours with Shands prior to applying. Volunteers assist technicians in the OR. With permission, volunteers may be allowed in operating rooms during surgery.

Pediatric Service Areas - Volunteers interact with a diverse pediatric population in a variety of settings. Volunteers are to provide comfort, diversional activities, and assist nursing staff as needed.
  • Cuddler Program (NICU II) *

  • Childbirth, Lactation & Mother-Baby Classes
  • Children’s Medical Services – 16th Ave
  • Pediatric Specialty Clinic – Medical Plaza
 
Pharmacy Service Areas - Volunteers in the pharmacy areas gain knowledge and experience in pharmacy operations. Volunteers assist with med delivery, stocking, packing, and any additional assistance as requested.

  • Outpatient Pharmacy - Medical Plaza
  • Investigational Drug Research
 
Psychiatric/Psychology Service Areas - Volunteers on the inpatient unit interact with patients, assist in group activities & provide clerical assistance as needed. The clinic areas require more clerical assistance.
  • Psychiatric Inpatient Unit - Shands 5th Floor *
  • Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic – Medical Plaza
  • Psychology Clinic - Clinical Psychology Department
 
Radiology Service Areas - Volunteers assist radiology staff in various functions like transporting patients, cleaning rooms, running supplies, etc. Opportunities may be available to see procedures.

Rehab Services (OT/PT) - Volunteers in rehab areas assist a Physical or Occupational Therapist in a designated clinic. Outpatient clinics serve a wide range of ages. Inpatient placement is limited.

Specialized Programs - If interested in one of these programs, please reference when you schedule your interview with Volunteer Services.
 
UF College of Dentistry - Volunteers in this area receives hands on experience in the College of Dentistry clinics. Training is required for the clinics to help volunteers assist dental students with patients and procedures.
