Carol Langdoc, MD, University of Florida College of Medicine assistant
professor of otolaryngology, now offers
Balloon Sinuplasty™ for the treatment of
patients with chronic sinusitis.
Q: What is Balloon Sinuplasty™?
A: Balloon Sinuplasty™ is a new,
minimally invasive surgical procedure for
treating patients with chronic sinusitis. It is
an outpatient procedure that
gently stretches and widens the sinus openings, allowing them to drain.
Q: How does Balloon Sinuplasty™
differ from traditional sinusitis surgery?
A: Traditional sinus surgery involves the destruction and removal of tissue
around the sinuses. This requires longer time in the operating room. Traditional
sinus surgery also can cause scarring of tissue, which results in the need for
additional sinus surgery in up to 20 percent of patients.
Balloon Sinuplasty™ utilizes
catheters and inflatable balloons that widen the
sinus passages and provide relief from sinusitis.
As a result of this minimally
invasive approach, Balloon Sinuplasty™
minimizes patient discomfort, bleeding and
scarring of the tissue. It also results in quicker recovery times, with most
patients resuming normal activities within 24 hours of the procedure.
Q: Who are candidates for Balloon
Sinuplasty™?
A: Balloon Sinuplasty™ is a safe
and effective treatment for most patients
with chronic sinusitis and
recurring sinusitis that has proven unresponsive
to medical treatment. Unfortunately, patients with
nasal polyps will still require traditional
sinus surgery in order to remove the polyps.
