The kidney functions to make urine. By making urine, the kidney performs these important jobs:

Remove waste products from the body
Regulate salt and fluid in the body
Balance acid in the body
Make hormones that regulate blood pressure and make red blood cells

Renal failure results from damage to the kidney tissue. Many disorders can cause damage to kidney tissue. Some of these are: congenital (disorder from birth), cystic diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, and urinary tract diseases.

In end-stage renal disease (ESRD) the kidney has less than 10 percent normal function and dialysis or transplantation becomes necessary to maintain life. All renal transplantation candidates must have, or be rapidly approaching, ESRD.

Shands at UF difference
The Shands Transplant Center at UF performed the first successful kidney transplant in Florida in 1966. Since then, UF physicians tranplanted more than 3,900 patients with ESRD.
