Streetlight Program
 |
Bringing the light from the street into the lives of hospitalized adolescents. |
On any given day at Shands Children’s Hospitals at UF, there are 20 or
more adolescents on the pediatric floors sharing care and entertainment
space with little children.
They are there because they have lost their health, but they have also lost their
place in school, their friends, their dreams for the future and so much more.
They are in one of the leading medical facilities in the country, but some of
their needs are not medical. Streetlight is trying to meet those unique needs.
Shands
Children’s Hospitals have been bringing hope into the lives of
adolescents for years. Now Streetlight, a ground-breaking pilot program,
will begin to meet their unique psychosocial needs by customizing the
rooms of individual patients (which may include items such as posters of the patient's favorite celebrity),
facilitating relationships with peers, profiling and preserving their non-medical
identity, keeping them connected to pop culture, promoting self-advocacy and
independence, and hopefully creating an Adolescent Unit and Teen Lounge.
